Mixed
method research is an important type of research and so by all means conduct
mixed method research but do not mix it up.
How to conduct mixed method research and
especially how to conduct and how to structure the methodology chapter of mixed
method research is something that is a question that we will briefly respond
to.
So mixed method research, the methodology
chapter or section of mixed method research has several sections.
The first section is basically introduction to
the chapter; in this section as the very name suggests we simply introduce what
the chapter is about and so what are the main components and contents of the
chapter.
This section explains why a mixed method
research was selected and it also provides an overview of the research design,
the data collection procedures, the sampling techniques, data analysis methods
and ethical consideration.
So these are the main components in the
introduction section.
Generally the methodology chapter is the third
chapter of a research thesis or the third section of a research paper, which is
why for the introduction we can use 3.1 or the first section of the third main
chapter or main section of a research thesis.
In the first one, the introduction, we just
provide an overview of the main components of this chapter.
In the second section or 3.2, we talk about
the research paradigm.
A research paradigm generally is basically a
world view and a research paradigm is basically the representation of the
researcher's world view in their research.
So the research paradigm basically describes
the philosophical foundations or basis of the study.
Generally mixed method research uses the third
paradigm or the pragmatist paradigm or you can say pragmatism.
This is the paradigm that emphasizes using
both quantitative and qualitative methods of research and both quantitative and
qualitative data collection methods.
Data analysis methods are used in order to
find answers to our questions and to effectively conduct our research
regardless of the methodological traditions.
Generally the purists follow one or another
tradition, for example the positivistic tradition or the naturalistic or
interpretivistic tradition, but in a mixed method research the focus is
basically not on those high paradigmatic exclusive approaches or understandings
or philosophies.
The focus basically is on a practical
solution, finding practical solutions to our research questions or research
problems.
Now the third section is called the research
approach.
Generally in quantitative studies we use the
deductive approach, in qualitative studies we make use of the inductive
approach or the bottom up approach, while in the mixed method research there is
a combination of deductive quantitative and inductive qualitative approaches.
This is done to provide a more comprehensive
understanding to our questions or to find more comprehensive answers to our
questions regardless of the suitability or the exclusive desirability of one or
another method of research.
Now the fourth section then is the research
design.
The research design generally outlines how the
quantitative and qualitative methods are integrated into our research.
The common mixed method research designs
include the first one, convergent parallel design, where both types of data are
collected simultaneously and then those data are integrated for analysis and
interpretation.
In the explanatory sequential design, which is
also a mixed method research design, quantitative data are collected first
followed by qualitative data and that is used for explanations of the results
from quantitative data.
And the third design is exploratory sequential
design where qualitative data are collected first to explore an issue and then
it is followed by quantitative data to test the findings that we get through
the qualitative data.
And the last one is embedded design where one
method is embedded within another as a supportive component.
Because one is actually part of the other one,
that's called the embedded mixed method research design.
The next section of the research methodology
chapter of mixed method research is the study setting.
This section basically describes the location
or the environment or the place where or the site where the research takes
place.
This section provides information about, for
example, the institution or organization or community or the geographical
location or area where the study has been conducted or will be conducted.
Then the next section is 3.6 or the sixth
section which is the population of the study.
Here the population of the study is described
and this basically refers to the entire group of individuals, organizations or
units that meet the criteria for inclusion in the research study.
The population basically defines the target
group from which the sample will be selected.
The next section following this section is the
sampling technique and the sample size section.
As the very name suggests, in this section the
sampling method used for the quantitative phase, such as simple random
sampling, stratified sampling, or systematic sampling, and then the sampling
method used for the qualitative phase, such as purposive sampling or convenient
sampling, are described and rationalized.
Thirdly in these sections the sample is
rationalized for determining the sample size for both phases.
You can say in simple in the sampling
technique and sampling size section we describe and we rationalize samples for
both parts, the qualitative parts of the study and for the quantitative part or
phase of the study.
This is then followed by the next very
important section of this chapter which is called the data collection
instruments or instrumentation section, or some people also call it data
collection tools.
In this section we basically describe the
tools or instruments or means that we use for collecting data.
For example, in the quantitative part of the
mixed method research we will use questionnaires, checklists or tests for
quantitative data collection; for the qualitative part we will use interviews
generally, or focus group discussions or observations for qualitative data
collection.
This section also explains how these
instruments are useful or the rationalization of these instruments and in what
ways data collected through these instruments will actually address our
research questions or research objectives.
The next section of the mixed method research
methodology section basically is pilot testing or piloting.
Before we make use of our data collection
tools, we need to pilot them to see whether they are able to collect us useful
data.
Pilot testing basically involves administering
the instruments such as the questionnaires or interviews or observation
checklists on a small group before we collect data from the main sample.
This process helps us identify ambiguities and
possible problems in the data collection process.
Besides this process improves the clarity of
our research instruments and helps us in assessing the feasibility of our
research and the usefulness of our data collection tools or methods.
This section then is followed by the next one
which is the validity and reliability section or trustworthiness.
In our research methodology for mixed method
research designs we need to include sections related to validity and
reliability.
This section basically ensures the quality of
the research.
If a research is valid, if it is reliable, if
the process and outcomes of our research are trustworthy, we can say that our
research is quality research.
Generally in quantitative studies we make use
of validation such as content validity and construct validity and reliability.
In qualitative studies we try to have
credibility, to describe the credibility, the transferability of our research
sites and research processes and outcomes, the dependability of our research
process in terms of coming up at authentic outcomes or findings and the
confirmability.
So validity and reliability in quantitative
studies actually mean content validity, construct validity and reliability,
while in qualitative studies in this section we will describe the credibility,
transferability, dependability and confirmability.
In short the trustworthiness of the research
process and outcomes.
And then the next section, 3.11, is the data
collection procedure.
We need to basically describe the data
collection procedure and how we actually collected the data.
This section basically explains the data
collection process step by step, whether we begin with quantitative data
collection or qualitative data collection or we do it simultaneously.
We also need to describe the process of, for
example, obtaining permission from authorities and permission from the
participants.
We also need to include the process of
contacting participants or recruiting participants.
We also need to describe here the
administering of the instruments such as questionnaires or interviews or
experiments and we also need to describe how we actually recorded the data
collection process.
After this the next section, 3.12, is data
analysis.
Once we have collected data, although in many
cases data collection and analysis especially in the qualitative part go side
by side, data analysis could also be a distinct part of the process.
So at in this section we explain how data will
be analyzed or how data were analyzed.
In quantitative studies we make use of
descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, correlations, regression, t
tests, ANOVA, etc.
We can do this analysis through the use of
software or we can do that manually.
In qualitative analysis we generally make use
of thematic analysis or content analysis and we also make use of narrative
analysis or the analysis of the narratives or stories of the participants.
And we make use of coding and such coding
could be manual or we could make use of certain softwares such as NVivo or
Atlas.ti and etc.
Once we do the analysis of the qualitative
part and the quantitative part, the next part is basically to integrate the
findings from both parts because ultimately in mixed method research the focus
is on finding answers to our research questions.
For that we have collected both type of data
and analyzed both type of data.
Now we want to combine findings from both
types of data and so there is need for integration.
The quantitative and qualitative results are
then compared and they are cross-checked, in many cases merged, or they are
connected to each other to actually answer our research questions and to
actually achieve our research objectives comprehensively.
So now the last part is that we need to have
an integration strategy.
We need to have a section where we should
describe how we actually integrated findings from our quantitative part and
from our qualitative part.
In this section there is an explanation of how
quantitative and qualitative findings will be integrated or were integrated.
Integration may occur during the data
collection process, it could occur during the data analysis, and it could also
happen during the interpretation.
Generally integration happens through all
these processes during the data collection, data analysis and interpretation
sections.
When actual authentic integration takes place
the result is a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena that we are
researching.
And lastly ethical considerations very
important every research should follow established ethical norms and values.
This section, 3.14 ethical consideration,
describes the ethical principles that we have followed or that we shall follow
in order to conduct our study.
These include for example informed consent or
consent from people that we have included in our samples in our studies,
voluntary participation of the participants, confidentiality and anonymity.
These are important considerations and I have
a whole lecture on ethical considerations available in this space that you can
watch later on.
And privacy and protection of the data in the
respondents or the participants, the right of the participants or the
respondents in your study to withdraw whenever they want and ethical approval
from relevant review committees of the institutions or the bodies that are
responsible for ensuring quality and authentic research.
Such bodies could be inside academia but they
could also be part of professional bodies.
The next part is delimitation of the
methodology.
We also need to have a section that identifies
the boundaries of our methodology so for example the selected population, the
study setting, the research design and time frame.
So what are the various stages of our
research, when will the various steps and stages of the study be conducted.
For example if it's a longer duration research
spreading over years we have to divide in years, if it is shorter duration we
have to divide into days or months or weeks and so on.
So we need to have a time frame that we should
include in our methodology.
Besides the delimitation section also
clarifies what methodology does and does not cover.
That is also an important part.
The last part we should have a chapter summary
in generally it is in the form of a paragraph or two paragraphs.
The final section summarizes the
methodological framework, it highlights the research design, it briefly
mentions the sampling, data collection methods, data analysis procedures, the
integration strategy and the ethical consideration.
You can say it's like a conclusion kind of a
thing and it also provides a transition to the next chapter.
So towards the end in a sentence or two you
can say what the readers should anticipate in the next chapter and this
basically presents the studies findings and analysis.
The next chapter or chapter four basically is
about findings and analysis.
To conclude the research methodology of the
mixed method research should have an introduction section, then it should have
a research paradigm, research approach, a research design section, the study
setting section, the population of the study section, then sampling techniques
and sampling size section, data collection instruments a section related to the
description of data collection instruments and also to its rationalization.
There should be a section to pilot testing,
besides there should be a section related to the validity reliability and the
trustworthiness of the research, and there should be a section related to how
the data was collected or how the data will be collected.
There should be a section on data analysis and
there should be a section of integration strategies integration of the
qualitative and quantitative part of the study so how will that happen or how
has that happened.
There should be a section on ethical
considerations and there should be a section on the delimitations or limits or
you can say scope or focus of the research methodology and lastly there should
be a brief paragraph or two paragraphs short chapter summary.
That's all about the mixed method research
methodology section in terms of its content and in terms of its structure.
